Torre Abbey is currently exhibiting “Two Painterly Printmakers”. This exhibition is the work of two Devon Guild Members, Simon Ripley and Deborah Treliving. Exhibition curator, Dee Martin writes,

“Both Deborah and Simon are extraordinary colourists and employing multiple print techniques create complex works which have great painterly qualities. Many of their pieces are unique monoprints”.

Deborah’s exhibition in the Long Gallery shows her artistic development as painter and printmaker. It includes her landscape paintings whilst a student at Bath Academy of Art in the 1970s, a range of her original prints and her most recent painting, the triptych “The Sacristan’s Cross”, inspired by Torre Abbey.

Experimenting with materials and processes is at the heart of her studio practice, and she uses print processes innovatively. She uses a wide range of printmaking techniques: screen-printing, relief printing and intaglio. Frequently many processes are used within one piece of work, as seen here in “Spirit of the Yew”. Deborah is well

known for her richly textured collagraph plates and heavily embossed carborundum prints. A passion for colour is evident throughout her work, and her palette ranges from the strong and vibrant, to the delicate and subtle. She continues to explore the power of colour through painting and printmaking in her studio, which is open to the public in the stable yard at Cockington Court.

At Bath Academy of Art Deborah’s painting tutors were Adrian Heath, Peter Kinley, and visiting lecturer Frank Auerbach. Her print tutors were Jack Shirreff, etching, and Stephen Russ, screen-printing. Following graduation and after moving to Torquay in 1983, she became printmaking tutor at South Devon College and a Member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, where last year she co-curated the exhibition Carpe Diem. Deborah’s work has been exhibited in London, Japan and across South West England.
